چکیده

Laboratory high energy density experiments using ion beam drivers rely upon the delivery of high-current, high-brightness ion beams with high peak intensity onto targets. Solid-state scintillators are typically used to measure the ion beam spatial profile but they display dosedependent degradation and aging effects. These effects produce uncertainties and limit the accuracy of measuring peak beam intensities delivered to the target. For beam tuning and characterizing the incident beam intensity, we have developed a cross-calibrating diagnostic suite that extends the upper limit of measurable peak intensity dynamic range. Absolute intensity calibration is obtained with a 3μm thick tungsten foil calorimeter and streak spectrometer. We present experimental evidence for peak intensity measures in excess of 400 kW/cm using a 0.3 MV, 25 mA, 5-20 μsec K beam. Radiative models and thermal diffusion effects are discussed because they affect temporal and spatial resolution of beam intensity profiles.

A first prototype of a scintillator strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter was built, consisting of 26 layers of tungsten absorber plates interleaved with planes of 45×10×3 mm plastic scintillator strips. Data were collected using a positron test beam at DESY with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV/c. The prototype’s performance is presented in terms of the linearity and resolution of the energy

A scintillator tile-fiber preshower detector for the CDF central calorimeter

The physics program at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider will continue to explore the high energy frontier of particle physics until the commissioning of the LHC at CERN. The luminosity increase provided by the Main Injector requires upgrades beyond those implemented for the first stage of the Tevatron’s Run II physics program. The upgrade of the CDF calorimetry includes: (i) the replacement durin...

Damage studies on irradiated tungsten by helium and argon ions in a plasma focus device

Damage of tungsten due to helium and argon ions of a PF device was studied. Tungsten samples were irradiated by 20 shots of the plasma focus device with argon and helium as working gases, separately. The tungsten surface was analyzed by SEM, before and after irradiation. SEM revealed dense blisters with diameters of a few hundred nanometers, on the samples which were irradiated by helium ions, ...

Analyses of test beam data using the CALICE calorimeter

We discuss several features of hadronic showers recorded in the high granularity CALICE Si-W ECAL and scintillator-tile HCAL and confront them with several Geant4 physics models. The first measurements of the time-structure of hadronic showers in a tungsten scintillator calorimeter are presented. The high granularity of the CALICE calorimeters allows a software compensation which improves the e...

High Energy Beam Test of the PHENIX Lead–Scintillator EM Calorimeter

In the PHENIX experiment at RHIC, the electro-magnetic calorimeter plays an important role in both the heavy-ion and spin physics programs for which it was designed. In order to measure its performance in the energy range up to 80GeV, a beam test was performed at the CERN-SPS H6 beam line. We describe the beam test and present results on calorimeter performance with pion and electron beams.
